I used to read Archie Comic when I was a kid. On a recent trip to the grocery store I noticed an Archie comic book with Archie proposing to Veronica. For nostalgia's sake I flipped through it and discovered that Veronica Lodge is pregnant. That's quite a departure from the stories I read as a kid. Archie's getting busy!
Times sure have changed in Riverdale. And guess what? Times are changing all over. It wasn't that long ago that you had to go to two different stores to buy groceries and a skateboard. No more. Now you can go to several different discount box-stores and pick up food, a skateboard and even some motor oil.
One thing that has not changed is the adage, "Jack of all trades - Master of NONE!:
Does a store selling thousands of different products from DVDs and hotdogs to wide-screen TVs and clothing know anything about skateboarding? Hell no! "Master of none" comes back to mind. All these stores offer is low pricing. The problem is they are only able to offer low pricing by selling lower quality goods and services. Yes, bulk purchasing helps, but many of the products are cheap and poorly manufactured.
Your local independent skate shop is the only place to buy reliable high quality skateboard equipment. Just because the discount stores have skateboards on their shelves, don't be fooled into buying these poorly made knock-off boards. These stores only want your money. Who's gonna help you replace the bushings in your trucks - the guy at the skate shop or the greeter at Walmart? Support your local skate shop!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
