The simplicity of that bench you love to grind is one of many obstacles you'll encounter in the streets. Along those same streets you'll also encounter obstacles of a different kind; discount stores, box-stores, malls, sporting goods stores and toy stores. All of them would love to sell you a new skateboard. And who doesn't love a new ride?
The problem is quality. None of these places sell real skateboards. By real we mean those made from quality materials by reputable folks who know skateboarding!
The guy who lays that pink base-coat on skate decks in Taiwan doesn't care about skaters. Neither does the next guy on that assembly line who screened a Bratz logo on the bottom. The guy who keeps the robot loaded with cheap bolts for truck assembly could care less about skaters. the ones who bolt the wheels on the axles don't care about the un-lubed non-rated bearings or the fact that the bolts are so tight they're crushing the bearings and the wheels don't spin.
Want to know who cares least about skateboarders?
The purchasing agent who just sealed a deal for 100,000 units of these cheap-ass $20 skateboards to line the shelves of his employer - Walmart, Target, Toys R US. Pick a retailer - they're all the same when it comes to skateboard quality.
Only your local independent skateboard shop sells high quality skateboards and products. They may cost a bit more than the cheap crap at discount stores, but you're paying for quality, reliability and a staff who skate and can really help you find all the right equipment!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
