When was the last time you encountered a cop and were offered a donut?
When was the last time you went to Walmart or Kmart to buy a skateboard?
The correct answer is NEVER! Lots of different types of stores sell what initially look like skateboards. Next time you're in a toy store, sporting goods store or discount box-store, like Target, take a look at their skateboard offerings. You'll find them in the "Toys" isle. Know why? Because when you spend $25 on a complete, you're only getting a toy. These retailers have no clue what a real skateboard is. They just want your money!
Head over to your local skate shop and see if you don't see a difference. Sure their boards and equipment are more expensive, but that's because it legit product. It is quality tested and comes from reputable manufacturers who know and care about the production of skate equipment. Many skateboard manufacturers have been making skate equipment for decades. All that experience directly benefits you as they improve their products year after year. They aren't trying to make them cheaper each year. They make them better.
Employees at local independent skate shops are a great source of knowledge and advice when it comes to buying/replacing skateboard equipment. You wouldn't ask a clerk at Kmart to suggest a good board, would you? Hell no! Only your local skate shop has the expertise and products to keep you rolling. Look them up and help support local shops by not wasting money on crappy skate products in box-stores!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
